Marcos Rey

Bio

Marcos Rey is a self-taught artist born in Spain. He has practiced for more than 15 years in Arequipa, Peru, honing his technique and craft. He learns constantly from the masters of the nineteenth century and from contemporary artists, studying their artwork and comprehending the processes behind each one of them.

Rey received several international awards for his drawing and painting, and was a two-time finalist in the Figurativas contest, hosted by the Fundació de les Arts i els Artistes in Barcelona. He also received an Honorable Mention in the 15th ARC Salon Competition and five Honorable Mentions in the ModPortrait Contest, hosted by “Galería Artelibre and the Fundació de les Arts i els Artistes in Spain. Currently, some of his artwork is showcased in the European Museum of Modern Art (MEAM) in Spain, as well as in the Museo Arte Contemporanea (MACS) in Italy.

Statement

“I deepen into the skin through the textures that emphasize the identity of that person, in a volatile, indefinite instant. My artwork does not tell stories, nor is it born out of inspiration or the desire to transcend; the works are images that describe moments in the life of someone that probably exists only in my mind.”
