Yuriy Ibragimov

Bio

Yuriy Ibragimov’s layered images have a rare quality: they simultaneously capture the complexity and the clarity of life. The wrought quality of his encaustic and oil processes lends itself to a turbid visual experience and, from a distance, his images seem obscured and abstracted. In actuality, Ibragimov’s paintings intimately and delicately render specific moments. They evoke the distinct characteristics of an experience, whether capturing a woman’s look of surprise or the wind’s effect on a willowy tree. Because of their coexisting roughness and lucidity, Ibragimov’s paintings are movingly honest, embodying both the indecipherability and the transparency of daily experience.

Statement

“The monochrome technique does not distract the eye and makes it possible to see not the object itself, but its essence. Therefore, I turn to monochrome because it has a certain detachment from the real world. Another interesting facet is the connection between monochrome paintings and monochrome photographs. Photographers today use black and white more frequently than color, due to the (ironic) richness from its simplicity. Limiting the color palette allows me to fully concentrate on subtle tonal differences. The monochrome world helps me to penetrate into the essence of things to show reality more expressively.”
